Madhya Pradesh police on Saturday ordered probe into a local Congress leader’s allegation of sexual harassment of a girl by a RSS functionary.

The BJP, however, has denied that the alleged functionary had any links either with the RSS or the BJP.

Police chief Nandan Dube has entrusted IG Shahdol range with the probe after local Congress women leader Deepti Singh called on him on Saturday evening.

Earlier, Congress’ chief spokesperson KK Mishra held a press conference and alleged that one RSS functionary Rambabu Gupta, resident of Anuppur (656 km east from here), attempted to rape a woman. Mishra also alleged that many other women had been sexually exploited by him.

The party also released copies of a CD that carried clips of Gupta allegedly hugging a girl and produced the victim before media. She alleged that the "baba", who claimed himself to be an astrologer, attempted to rape her and threatened with dire consequences if she dared to disclose it. She said this happened one and a half months ago.

Mishra said that the police didn’t take any action on the victim's complaint.

Later, Congress leader and party spokesperson Deepti Singh called on the DGP.

On RSS' behalf, the BJP officially issued a statement, terming the Congress' allegations as 'baseless'. BJP spokesperson and MLA from Bhopal Vishwas Sarang denied that the person named by the Congress leader was either connected to RSS or the BJP. "This is a character assassination attempt which is condemnable," he added.

Rambabu Gupta’s cell phone was switched off.
