A day after four tiger paws were recovered from Chhindwara district, forest department staff seized carcass of the big cat from an agricultural field, on Tuesday. The carcass was found buried in Bandhan Rawat village, 10 km from the Pench Tiger Reserve core area.

Three men were arrested on Monday with body parts of the tiger from a road leading to Bandhan village. The trio was taking the paws of the tiger to a local godman for a ritual, which they believed would make them richer.

Chhindwara chief conservator of forests (CCF) Chitranjan Tyagi told HT that Sonu Kirar, one of the three men who were arrested on Monday, had laid a live wire around his field to protect it from wild boars that were destroying his crops in February. However, a tiger got caught in the wire and was electrocuted.

Kirar told forest officials that he buried the tiger in his field, but removed its paws recently to perform the ritual, but was arrested along with two others when he was looking for a local godman.

A few months back, a tiger skin was seized from a godman in Chhindwara district. The skin belonged to a tiger from the Satpura National Park and had been killed for some superstitious belief.

This is the eighth tiger death reported from Pench Tiger Reserve this year.
