A 10-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat broke down in front of her parents and recounted her alleged rape while the family watched a television docudrama on Monday night, prompting the family to lodge a complaint against the accused, a meditation centre teacher.

According to police, the girl was watching the TV show with her family when she suddenly ran to her room and started weeping.

Pressed by her worried parents, she told them that she had been raped on July 18 but had kept quiet since the suspect Mahesh Korwane, who has been arrested after the parents approached police, had threatened her with dire consequences.

Korwane has been charged with sections of rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

PK Patel, the in-charge of Kotwali police station of Balaghat district, said the accused works with a private meditation training centre that the girl would visit regularly.

This is the second such incident in less than a month. In late July, a girl in Dwarkapuri said she had been raped by her step father for over six months, after having seen a TV show that dramatised a similar crime.
