MP govt decision to appoint commissioner upsets docs

The recent decision of the Madhya Pradesh government to introduce a post of commissioner in the medical education department and appoint an IAS officer on the post has upset the department officials.

The recent decision of the Madhya Pradesh government to introduce a post of commissioner in the medical education department and appoint an IAS officer on the post has upset the department officials.

According to senior doctors, the state government decision raises questions over efficiency of doctors in handling administrative works.

"I feel those with technical knowledge can handle medical education department better than anyone else. There is a belief that administration can be only done by certain group of people, but this is wrong. According to me, only a doctor can run technical departments like medical education department better," said former director of medical education (DME) Dr Nirbhaya Shrivastava.

He said an academic oriented doctor can understand the needs and requirements of medical college.

Alike health department, this decision may suppress doctors of medical education department too who were working for the betterment of medical education in the state, he added.

The decision of introducing IAS officer in medical education department was taken during cabinet meeting held on Tuesday. At present, director medical education controls all the working of directorate of medical education (DME).

The DME was headed by principal secretary who is an IAS officer.

Former superintendent of Hamidia Hospital Dr DK Verma said appointing IAS officers over doctors compels good doctors to leave the department.
