Three family members of a young man who apparently eloped with a girl committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday after having allegedly been subjected to police harassment.
The incident, reported from Hoshangabad’s Shivpur town, prompted police to launch an investigation after a suicide note was found and it emerged that the police team that grilled the three – the youth’s parents and his sister – was from Bhopal and had tried to bring them to the state capital.
The police team was apparently acting on the complaint KS Bhatt, father of Pooja Sharma who eloped with the boy.
Bhatt, who works at a Hindi newspaper, apparently harassed the family over the couple’s actions, according to a purported suicide note left behind by the trio.
A police source said Bhatt had called the family up and threatened them if they did not ensure the girl’s return.
The dead were identified as Brijmohan Bairagi, 55, his wife Gulabbai, 50 and their daughter Bharti Bairagi, 22.
Their son Deepak, who lived 70km away in Bhopal where he studied at a college, eloped with a 24-year-old girl.
Hoshangabad superintendent of police (SP) AP Singh said a case was registered.
"I learnt that a police team from Bhopal went to Shivpur town recently and they were trying to take all three family members to Bhopal but they didn’t do it after the intervention of local police. We are conducting an investigation on all possible angles and very soon the reason would be known”, Singh said.
The town inspector (TI) of Ashoka Garden, Bhopal – where the case was registered -- said his station’s team visited Shivpur only once to record the statements of Deepak’s family members.
