A 26-year-old inmate of a jail allegedly died due to a cardiac arrest on Monday here. Saurabh Jain, who was in Central Jail, Bhopal had complained of stomach pain and collapsed before the jail doctor during treatment. He was then rushed to Hamidia hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead, police said.
Jain, a resident of Aishbag locality in the city, was facing charges of kidnapping after a case was registered against him at Chuna Bhatti police station in the city and was in Central Jail, Bhopal while his case was under-trial in the district court.
However, Jain’s family members have accused the authorities of brutality and torture in the jail which resulted in his death.
“Saurabh was present in the court on Monday for the hearing of his case. We met him in the court premises at around 4 pm, where he was happy that he was going to get bail. He also seemed absolutely fit and never complained of any health problem. It seems impossible that he would die of any health problem,” said Suveen Kumar Jain, father of the deceased while speaking to HT. He said that on Monday at around 11 pm, police officials informed them that Saurabh complained of vomiting and stomach pain at around 7.10 pm to the jail doctor. During treatment he collapsed after which he was rushed to the Hamidia Hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors at around 7.40 pm.
“Police officers informed us at about 11 pm in the night, four hours after Saurabh’s death. The police officials also said that he was suffering from tuberculosis(TB) due to which he died, but they never gave us any medical report on it. Also, Saurabh had never told us that he was suffering from TB,” said Jain.
“There were injury marks on his arms, legs and head which proves that he was thrashed in the jail after returning from the court on Monday. Also there were blood stains on his mouth which proves that he was beaten. We demand a transparent and independent inquiry in the whole case to punish the guilty responsible for my son’s death,” added Jain.
Superintendent, Central Jail, Akhilesh Singh Tomar denied that Saurabh was beaten and tortured in jail.
“He was not beaten or tortured in jail. The jail doctor said that he suddenly collapsed while he was treating him. Saurabh was rushed to Hamidia hospital where he died. A judicial probe has already been ordered in the case and the post-mortem report is awaited which will reveal the actual reasons behind his death,” Tomar said.
