Pitching a surprise, the BJP on Monday announced Kanta Sadarang as its candidate for the post of mayor for the Chhindwara municipal corporation. The party could not announce the candidate for Chhindwara on Sunday even as it had announced candidates for Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur on Sunday after a meeting of the state election committee.
Till Sunday, it was almost certain that the party would field Vijaya Yadav as its candidate for mayor from Chhindwara. However, intense lobbying for the candidature prevented the name from being announced on Sunday. The announcement came as a surprise to many as Kanta Sadarang's name was not among the probables.
BJP state president Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan on Monday said that the party would win all 4 municipal corporations viz. Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Chhindwara where local bodies elections are to be held.
Chhindwara is the pocket borough of former union minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath. The BJP accords importance to elections in Chhindwara as it is a matter of prestige to defeat the Congress there. In 2014 Lok Sabha election, Chhindwara was one of the two seats Congress managed to win in the state.
