External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, under attack from the Opposition for helping controversial former cricket administrator Lalit Modi in securing travel documents in Britain to be with his wife during her cancer treatment, has found support from unexpected quarters.
State Congress vice-president Lakshman Singh, who had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Vidisha against Swaraj, put up a message on social media on Sunday saying there was nothing wrong in her move.
He then asked people to have a large heart and broader view in such issues.
The five-term Lok Sabha MP’s views are vastly different from that of his party, which has been demanding Swaraj’s resignation.
Lakshman Singh’s wife died due to cancer a few years ago.
The Congress leader told HT that his views were personal.
When asked if his wife’s death had affected his views, he said: “Yes, it has everything to do with having closely seen people struggle with cancer.”
The Congress leader had recently led a padayatra in his former Lok Sabha constituency Rajgarh, highlighting the shortcomings of the state BJP government.
The message on Lakshman Singh’s Facebook page read, “Nothing wrong in Lalit Modi getting travel visa to get his ailing wife, with cancer, treated. Let us all have a large heart and a broad mind in matters like these.”
