Hoshangabad district collector Sanket Bhonve ordered on Wednesday a magisterial inquiry into the alleged suicide pact by three members of a family in Hoshangabad district after their son eloped with a girl on Monday.
In a new twist to the case, the police said Deepak Bairagi, 26, who had eloped with the Pooja Sharma, 24, on April 28, had earlier run away with three others.
The police pointed out that the family members allegedly took their lives to escape social infamy.
In the suicide note, Brijmohan has claimed that he along with his wife and daughter were being harassed by the police apparently on the complaint of Pooja's father KS Bhatt.
A police source said Bhatt had called the family up and threatened them if they did not ensure Pooja's return.
Confirming the news about the magisterial inquiry, Hoshangabad superintendent of police AP Singh said, “He (Deepak) eloped with three girls in the past and all three cases were registered at different police stations. This must be one of the reasons that prompted the family to take (such an) extreme step, though the actual reason would be established only after the complete investigation.”
Brijmohan Bairagi, 55, a resident of Shivpur town of Hoshangbad district, his wife Gulabbai, 50 and Bharti Bairagi, 22, a student of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, had committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance after having allegedly been subjected to police harassment.
