A youth was tied to a tractor and set on fire on Sunday night by a girl’s family believing he egged on his cousin who repeatedly molested the schoolgoing teenager in Betul’s Ambada village.
Kamlesh Pandagre, 24, was taken to Betul district hospital with 100% burns and he died on Monday afternoon. Kamlesh’s 21-year-old cousin Ajay was arrested twice in September 2015 and January 2016 on charges of sexually harassing the girl. Ajay, out on bail, allegedly shadowed the girl despite being cautioned by the girl’s family multiple times.
Amla police said the girl’s family had asked Kamlesh to warn Ajay. Enraged by their belief Kamlesh was party to Ajay’s repeat molestation attempts, the girl’s family dragged him to a nearby field, tied him with a towel to a parked tractor and set him on fire.
The accused include the girl’s father, mother, two brothers and grandmother.
Amla police station in-charge Alok Srivastava said: “We first booked five members of the girl’s family and four unidentified accused for attempt to murder, but with Kamlesh succumbing to burns on Monday, the accused have now been booked for murder”. The police said they were probing why the girl’s family targeted the cousin rather than the tormentor.
