The Government Railway Police (GRP) are interrogating vendors to collect information about the loot with Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Jayant Malaiya last week.
Sources say the GRP suspect the role of former vendors in the robbery. There are around 1,200 such vendors in Uttar Pradesh, who were earlier working on contract with the railways but have no work now, as their contracts were terminated. GRP officials detained around a dozen vendors and were questioning them.
Malaiya and his wife Sudha were robbed on a train between Kosi Kalan and Hodal stations under Agra division of NCR zone on Thursday. The minister lodged a complaint at Nizamuddin railway station but later the complaint was transferred to Mathura GRP for further proceedings.
On Saturday, DIG railways (NCR) Rampal carried out a spot inspection between Kosi Kalan and Hodal stations where the incident took place and talked to the officials regarding the case.
Additional director general (ADG railways, Uttar Pradesh) Javed Ahmad also did not rule out the possibility of some vendors being involved in the loot. He said they were experts in boarding and de-boarding moving trains. However, he added, “We are working on the case with the help of Madhya Pradesh GRP and will soon nab the culprits.”
He added, “In view of increasing incidents of robbery and theft on trains, especially between Jhansi and Nizamuddin, we are increasing the police personnel in the onboard escort teams.”
