A mystery caller, who has been troubling senior jail department officials in Madhya Pradesh since May, has now started calling women officials of jail and the police department.
The caller, who introduces himself as Ramesh Singh Gaharwar, has been posing as close aides of top political personalities in the state, including state BJP chief Nandkumar Singh Chauhan and former home minister Babulal Gaur.
But the state police are clueless about his actual identity.
Most of the calls have been made from four different numbers to women officials, including Satna central jail superintendent Shephali Rajesh, Vidisha jail superintendent Leena Koshtha and Sagar district’s Civil Lines police station in charge Manju Singh.
While Koshtha and Singh received a call on June 29, Rajesh was called on June 2.
“The caller rang on my phone on June 29 introducing self as Ramesh Singh Gaharwar, a close aide of state BJP chief. He subsequently asked me whether I wanted to get transferred to somewhere else,” Koshtha told HT on Wednesday.
The caller informed Koshtha that DG (Jails) VK Singh was going to be transferred soon, while then home minister Babulal Gaur would be dropped from the state council of ministers which tuned out to be true the next day (on Tuesday.)
When the woman jail official objected to the caller talking to her, he started talking in a threatening tone before terminating the call.
The same day, the caller made a call to Singh -- in charge of Civil Lines police station in Sagar. Posing as a close aide of Gaur, he asked Singh whether she wanted to swap police stations with Sagar Mahila Thana in charge Uma Arya.
He also asked for Singh’s family details, on which Singh terminated the call before reporting the matter to the cyber cell of Sagar police.
“Subsequent investigations by Sagar police’s cyber cell revealed that the call was made from a number subscribed in the name of a college student residing in Madhukar Shah Ward in Gopalganj area of Sagar. The student was subsequently called for questioning, which revealed that the caller had secured the concerned phone number by using the youngsters ID and address proofs,” Singh said.
The Sagar police cyber cell later found that the caller had made the call from Allahabad Road in Rewa district, which established that he was the same caller who had been making similar calls to jail department officials, including DG (Jails), ADG (Jails) and Satna central jail superintendent since May.
On July 2, a few hours before the ministers in Shivraj Singh Chouhan government were allocated portfolios, the caller rang Satna central jail superintendent Rajesh posing as Ramesh Singh -- personal staff of Rampur-Baghelan MLA Harsh Singh.
“We have sought call detail records of the numbers of phone numbers from which the calls are being made. Only after analysing the records, we can actually track who the caller is,” Jahangirbad police station in charge PS Thakur said.
