The 17-year-old girl who set herself on fire on Thursday in Banda following harassment by a youth succumbed to burns late Friday night, the police said on Saturday.
Following her death, a case was lodged against the youth identified as Sunil who was absconding, the Banda police said.
The girl’s family told the police that Sunil was harassing her for long.
After the girl, a resident of a village under Banda police station, set herself on fire, she was rushed to the Sagar district hospital where she died, the police added.
Banda police station sub-inspector RPS Yadav said the girl’s statement could not be recorded and Sunil was booked on the basis of the statements of the victim’s parents.
According to the hospital police substation, they informed Nayab tehsildar Deepak Tiwari about the girl’s precarious condition.
However, the nayab tehsildar said he was on panchayat election duty, so he could not come to record her statement.
A search was launched for the accused.
