Robbers chopped off an elderly woman’s legs to take away two thick silver anklets she was wearing on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday and she died of excessive bleeding.
The incident happened at Babri village in Sehore district. The body was found outside her house.
The criminals overpowered 70-year-old Avanta Bai but could not get her silver anklets, weighing 1.5kg and worth about Rs 15,000, off her legs, a police officer said. They then cut her legs with an axe.
This is the second such incident in the Rehti area of Sehore, 80km from Bhopal, in less than two years. In May 2014, criminals chopped off the legs of a 35-year-old pregnant woman to rob her silver anklets.
Police said the robbers probably pulled Avanta Bai out of the house or could have caught her when she went outside to attend nature’s call at night. She and her 80-year-old husband, Sunder Lal, lived alone. Their children lived elsewhere.
Lal found his wife murdered after he woke up around 4am.
“Lal informed his neighbours and they called the police. A case of murder and trespass has been lodged against unidentified persons,” Rehti police station in-charge JP Jadaun said.
