Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who was given a clean chit in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case by the National Investigation Agency, began a hunger strike in Bhopal on Monday demanding that she be allowed to take part at Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain and allowed to meet her guru Swami Avdheshanand.
Family members of Pragya told reporters that visiting Simhastha was her “last wish”.
A court in Dewas on May 5 had allowed Pragya’s petition that she be allowed to perform the Kumbh pilgrimage to Ujjain, but police have prevented her visit citing security issues, her brother-in-law Bhagwan Jha told reporters.
She has been receiving treatment at Bhopal’s Pandit Khushilal Ayurvedic Hospital for various ailments, including cancer.
“In her application, she (Pragya) had sought permission for four things -- darshan of Mahakaal, worshipping Kshipra, holy dip in Kshipra (river) and darshan of her guru Swami Avdheshanand. The court gave permission for all the four. But the police are not implementing the court’s order citing reasons like they don’t have enough cops who can provide her security cover during the pilgrimage,” Jha told reporters on Monday.
He said it was a clear contempt of the court. The decision of the BJP-led state government to not allow her to fulfil her last wish has also hurt her badly, he said.
“On one side the Shivraj Singh-led government is inviting and welcoming sadhus and saints from across India, but when a sadhvi from her home state is requesting that it is her last wish to go to Simhastha, she is not being allowed to go. She has even threatened that she will go for ‘deh tyag’ (leave her body) on May 21 if she was not allowed to visit Simhastha,” said Jha.
Pragya stopped taking medicines, juice or any food from 10 am on Monday. “She will take only water. Given her fragile health, her condition has already started to deteriorate. Around 12.30 pm, a team of doctors did a checkup and found her heart beat has increased from 72 to 105. If she continues her fast like this, her health will worsen very fast,” Jha said.
Sunil Joshi murder case trial on
Pragya has been unwell since 2008 when the Maharashtra police arrested her in connection with Malegaon blasts, charges in which have been dropped against her recently.
In February 2011, MP police arrested her from Mumbai in the Sunil Joshi murder case, which was being heard at a court in Dewas
“Because of the torture and harassment she has undergone till now, she has become a victim of many diseases. But she says her zest to fight against the injustice will continue till her last breath”, Jha said
She spent two out of four years in Bhopal recuperating at the ayurvedic hospital.
