Congress member of parliament Jyotiraditya Scindia escaped unhurt on Friday when a stage he was sitting on collapsed during a cricket tournament in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district, police said.
The incident occurred at noon when the dais where Scindia was seated along others gave in due to “excessive load” while he was being greeted by players and local residents at a cricket tournament at Badarwas, some 175 km from Gwalior, said a police official.
“The make-shift dais collapsed at the end of the tournament, which Scindia addressed as the chief guest, as players and local residents tried to climb on it en mass,” said Badarwas town inspector Timesh Chhari.
Scindia had finished his speech and was about to leave when the incident happened, he added.
Congress legislator from Kolaras Ram Singh, who was accompanying Scindia, sustained minor injuries in the mishap.
Dilip, an eyewitness said the platform collapsed due to overcrowding by public and players who wanted to meet Scindia in person.
“The incident took place after Scindia had delivered his speech. As more people including players and residents came on the dais to personally meet Scindia, the swelling crowd resulted in collapse of platform.”
Talking to Hindustan Times by phone, Scindia said he was in perfect health condition and after attending functions at Guna would proceed to Bhopal.
“Congress MLA Ram Singh, who sustained a minor injury and shock due to the incident, was stable. Doctors have examined him at Shivpuri… and his ECG report was normal…," said Scindia.
