A private school in Jabalpur withdrew a textbook on Wednesday after a controversy erupted over a picture of Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf displayed in a list of six great personalities of the world.
“The book titled ‘Naitik Shiksha, Samanya Gyan Evam Yoga’ is authored by Pankaj Jain and printed by the Gayatri Publication whose address is not mentioned over it,” Jabalpur district education officer SK Agrawal told HT.
The matter pertained to chapter eight of the book wherein the students are asked to identify the photograph of great personalities including Musharraf and write their names.
Advocate Amit Kumar Sahu on learning that the private school was teaching the students of class 3 about Musharraf as a great personality made a complaint to the district collector for action.
Sahu said, “My concern is that during his (Musharraf’s) tenure the Kargil war took place.” “Many of the soldiers sacrificed their lives in the Kargil war and the book mentions him (Musharraf) as a great personality,” he said. Sahu has made another complaint to the superintendent of police demanding to lodge an FIR in the matter.
This book is included in the list of books recommended for Class 3 in the private school.
The book’s cover page states that it is prepared according to the new syllabus of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
Chirst Asha School principal Manorama Awasthy said, “The book has been withdrawn.”
“The district administration has apprised the NCERT and the State School Education Commissioner about the matter,” Jabalpur district collector SN Rupla said.
