A woman has filed a formal complaint against a monkey she says stole her mobile phone, in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district on Monday.

Parvati Bahrani, a resident of Shahdol’s Gharaola colony, says she was working in the verandah of her house around 10 am when the monkey made its move. The woman claimed that she fled from the spot as the monkey made “aggressive” gestures leaving her cell phone behind.

The monkey scampered around the verandah for some time before picking up her cell phone and running away, Bahrani said in her complaint. The woman said she tried to chase the monkey, but in vain.

“Aggressive” monkeys invading homes and “attacking” people is quite common in the Gharaola area.

Kotwali police station town inspector Kamlendra Singh Karchuli said the police were yet to register a case in the matter but were investigating the cell phone theft.

Monkeys are venerated as manifestations of the Hindu god Hanuman in India.
