A mysterious geological activity near Rukhad in the buffer area of the Pench tiger reserve in Seoni district, some 400 kms from the state capital, is baffling local residents and the park administration alike.
Locals reported heat emanating from below the ground, along with rock like formations, after which the district administration called in a team from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) based in Nagpur.
The GSI is expected to give a report on the matter by Tuesday.
Meanwhile, locals have been prevented from visiting the area.
Field director, Pench tiger reserve, Alok Kumar told HT that four days back, the power distribution company employees had reported that an electric pole sunk into the earth after a crack developed on the ground at a place near Rukhad, about 20 kms from the district headquarters.
“Heat has been emanating from the cracks and the area is dotted with rock like formations that have been formed after basaltic rock has come to the surface and cooled down,” he said. He added that the mysterious activity is spread over about 400 sq feet area in the forests, adjoining NH 7.
On learning about the phenomenon, Seoni district collector Bharat Yadav asked the GSI to send a team to study it.
“The GSI team visited the area and will be submitting a report on the phenomenon by Tuesday. We have taken all precautions that people do not enter the area,” Yadav said.
Initially, on learning about the occurrence, people from Seoni also travelled to the place to have a look.
