Yet another tax has been added to list of taxes imposed by Bhopal Municipal Corporation ( BMC) on citizens- Narmada Tax. The state cabinet approved a proposal to the effect at its meeting on Tuesday. However, the tax is to be paid by those who construct their houses. There are several taxes and charges that a citizen has to pay to the BMC including property tax, water cess, solid waste management charges, integrated tax, cess on property tax etc.
Briefing the journalists about cabinet decisions, the state government spokesperson Narottam Mishra said the cabinet approved the rates of Narmada Tax with the objective of making funds available to Bhopal Municipal Corporation for running and maintaining Bhopal's Narmada Drinking Water Supply Scheme.
He said Narmada Tax would be realised at the time of granting building permission to new colonies and buildings. The BMC has to take loans from financial institutions to complete its projects. Sometimes, it has to pledge its properties too. The BMC has to repay loans to get freed its properties, hence the tax.
