‘Beer Yoga’ event scheduled at a hotel in Indore city on Sunday was cancelled after 26-year old yoga instructor Disha Gulati, organiser of the event, started getting lot of calls from right wing activists and others that she cannot hold the event as “mixing yoga with alcoholic beverage was unacceptable” .
Talking to HT Gulati said it was for the first time that Beer Yoga event was being organised in Madhya Pradesh.
“Beer Yoga, which originated in Germany, has already come to India in cities like Mumbai and Delhi…I thought I should organise one in MP”, she said.
Disha said that she had started publicizing the event through a local popular blog and social media. “The registration for participating in Beer Yoga was Rs 500. Already 30 people had registered. All was going fine till Saturday morning, when I got over 20 miss calls from a leader of a yoga association here, who told me I cannot hold this event as it was very wrong to mix alcohol with sacred yoga tradition”, she said.
Disha said later she found opposition against the event was going viral on the WhatsApp groups. “As I had put my mobile number on the poster for the event for registration purposes, lot of people started calling me that they won’t allow me to hold this event. In the afternoon, a police officer came and told me to give in writing that I had cancelled the event and that I will return the registration money I had taken from different people”, she said, “I gave in writing that I have cancelled it”.
Disha said she feels such an event was hyped because “there is word yoga in it... people get drunk at parties and commit crime, drive rashly, commit rapes. All that is okay, but this is the most sane and decent way to enjoy a bottle of beer. Tell me one person, who gets drunk on one bottle?”, she said.
Disha said beer had many health benefits. “Proper and responsible beer consumption can lower risk of developing kidney stone , improve cholesterol, reduce the risk diabetes, boosts ones bone health and so on”, she said.
“If these people raise the same voice against rapes and traffic nuisance, what a better place this city would be…Just because I am a girl and can be suppressed, doesn’t mean you have the right to send the police constable at my place..”, she said. .
Harinarayanachari Mishra, DIG Indore, told HT that the event was cancelled as police got lot of complaints from different quarters about it. . “Also, the organisers didn’t have the license for serving alcoholic beverage in the event at the hotel. So it had to be cancelled. Our officer took in writing from her that she cancelled the event”, he said.
