A number of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) workers received minor injuries when police resorted to light cane charge when they were marching towards chief minister’s house from Neelam Park on Wednesday.
NSUI state president Vipin Vankhede and national secretary Vandana Ben also received injuries in the clash.
NSUI had called for gherao of the chief minister’s house to highlight their outstanding demands, including resuming of student’s union election, withdrawal of orders imposing section 144 of the IPC on the university campus and putting a check on the criminal activities of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) workers.
Hundreds of students from across the state participated in the programme. Senior Congress leaders including state president Kantilal Bhuria, national secretary and Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam and NSUI national vice-president and state in-charge Bharat Kumar also took part in the programme.
Addressing the protestors Kantilal Bhuria said, “BJP government is corrupt and has failed in providing jobs to youth and also in implementing laws. State government is misleading our youth. We should face it and uncover their false promises.”
Sanjay Nirupam sought to ask the chief minister why no action has taken against 13 BJP ministers facing Lokayukta probe.
NSUI state in-charge Bharat Kumar said, “The criminal activities of ABVP are responsible for all the problems of education institutions.”
The police had made extensive arrangements at Lily Talkies Square to stall the march of NSUI workers towards chief minister’s house and feeble attempt of the agitators to jump to the other side of the barricades was sucessfully aborted with the use of mild force.
