bhopal Updated: Apr 11, 2010 15:55 IST

The number of jail inmates suffering from AIDS in Madhya Pradesh has dipped to 93 from 139 last year with authorities taking a number of measures like switching to disposable blades for shaving purpose.

According to the latest figure, 93 inmates are affected with the HIV, with the prisons in Bhopal Jail circle having 76 affected persons, followed by Indore Circle 6, Ujjain circle 5, Jabalpur, Rewa and Gwalior 2 each, State Director General of Prisons, P L Pandey said.

At present there is no AIDS affected person in Sagar, Datia, Seoni, Satna and Narsinghpur Jail circles, he said.

According to the 2009 figures, 139 prisoners were HIV affected, including 126 undertrials and 13 convicts.

The number of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) prisoners keeps on fluctuating, as around two lakh people are kept and released from more than 120 jails in the state every year, Pandey said.

As the number of HIV patients in jails were on a higher side last year, the prison authorities replaced old razors with disposable blades for shaving purposes, an official said.
