A physically challenged government school teacher set himself on fire on Friday after he was transferred to a remote jungle location, dying of his injuries a day later while undergoing treatment at Panna district hospital.

Mohanlal Verma, 47, set himself on fire at his village Ranibagh on Friday. His wife said he had lately been tense after he had been transferred from the government middle school at Samna village to Koni, a village while is deep inside the jungle with no road connectivity.

He had complained to various senior officials and on Thursday complained to the concerned education department officer but to no avail, Mohanlal’s wife alleged.

District education officer SP Mishra told HT he had met family members and even went to the hospital. However, he said he didn’t know what prompted Mohanlal to end life.

Meanwhile, District project coordinator (education department) Vishnu Tripathi told HT that Mohanlal was transferred according to rules. “After transfer list we had called for objections from those transferred but he did not apply and not appear in counselling,” Tripathi said.

Panna Kotwali police station officer DS Chouhan told HT that investigations were on.
