Pickpockets are ruling the roost at the Bhopal railway station.
A gang of pickpockets allegedly dragged and stabbed to death one of the gang members over sharing of booty near the railway station late on Thursday night.
In what may look like a scene from a Bollywood’s thriller, the crime took place on a foot overbridge near the railway yard, about 100m away from the drive-in platform number 6 of the railway station late on Thursday night, police said.
The criminals stopped and surrounded the victim Pawan Tanya alias Puran Giri, 46, a resident of Futa Makbara neighbourhood, when he was crossing the foot overbridge and stabbed him to death, they said.
A police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media, said two of the accused have been detained and an investigation was on.
Pickpockets are active at Bhopal’s main railway station with the government railway police (GRP) not being able to check their activities.
Thursday night’s killing is said to be fallout of differences among pocket-pickers over sharing their pickings, a few days ago.
Vendors and auto-rickshaw drivers at the railway station said the foot overbridge is mostly used by pickpockets and drug addicts at night.
But, the GRP takes no action, some of them said.
“As there is no security personnel deployed in the area, the pickpockets use the bridge to distribute the stolen money among themselves at night. One can see most of the pickpockets who are operating here at the bridge in the night,” said an auto-rickshaw driver, requesting anonymity.
Most of the auto-rickshaw drivers and vendors at the railway station Hindustan Times talked to said the foot overbridge and railway yard was a “ hub for criminal activities”.
“Drug addicts and other criminals (freely) move around the railway station. Whenever they get (an) opportunity they commit a crime and manage to go out of station easily,” said the owner of a food stall at the railway station.
According to the GRP crime records, more than 350 thefts, including pickpocket cases are registered with the GRP police station at the Bhopal railway station every year.
GRP police station in-charge DK Joshi said personnel were deployed all over the station complex.
”The incident occurred outside the station premises,” he said. He said Tanya, who was an accused in four theft cases, had a dispute with few of his gang members over sharing of money, following which he was stabbed to death.
