Police have arrested the caretaker of St Barthlomew Church Noel Pare for allegedly set afire the church in the Railway colony in Ratlam city here, Madhya Pradesh government spokesman and PWD Minister Kailash Vijawargiya said in Bhopal on Monday.
The church was set afire on Sunday in the early hours and later Pare reported the matter to the police claiming that some unidentified persons have vandalised the church and later set it afire.
Police had a doubt on Pare's claim and when questioned on the issue he admitted of committing the crime following which he was arrested by the police, Vijaywargiya said.
The church authorities were deducting some amount from his salary as he had borrowed Rs 8,000 from the church because of which he was facing financial problems and later set afire the church in anguish, the minister said.
Vijaywargiya criticised the Opposition parties for blaming the ruling party on the issue and added that the party would consider taking legal action against them.
Meanwhile, Christian community in Ratlam have protested against the incident and demanded action against those responsible for damaging the 86-year-old church.
