The father of 22-year-old Vikas Soniya, who died in a road accident in front of the state assembly in Bhopal, accused police of preventing an auto driver from taking his injured son to a hospital.
Gokul Prasad Soniya, the father of the deceased, alleged that when an auto driver tried to take an injured Vikas to a hospital in his auto, “he was stopped by the policemen standing there, who allegedly took him out from the auto-rickshaw and put him back on the road”.
He added that when some local boys recognised Vikas and loaded him onto another auto, the police once again stopped them and left him bleeding on the road.
“My son could have been saved if the police would have allowed the auto rickshaw to take him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. They left my son lying on the road for 30 minutes and only allowed him to be taken to the hospital after the ambulance came,” he said. “Their utter foolishness mixed with insensitivity cost my son his life.”
Gokul also expressed his dismay over chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, whose motorcade passed through the scene of the accident while Vikas lay injured on the road, not making the effort to meet the grieving family.
“I don’t want any compensation from the chief minister because it will not bring my son back. But Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who calls himself the chief minister of poor people, should have at least come and meet us,” he said.
While speaking to HT, Gokul broke down and said all he wanted was jobs for his two daughters to earn a living to sustain his family after his demise.
“I am a heart patient and have to take regular medication. My son used to drop and pick me up from the office, but now nobody is there to do that. I don’t earn much to afford a taxi to attend my office, so I request the government to just provide jobs to my daughters as I don’t want any compensation,” he said.
Additional superintendent of police (traffic), Sameer Yadav, who is investigating the case, said an inquiry into the allegations was underway.
“A high-level inquiry is going on to find all the facts related to the accident after which a report will be submitted to the authorities concerned. The police can only say something after the completion of the investigation,” he said.
