Indore will be hosting a one-day match on Sunday. While cricket will remain the centerpiece, the game will be played out off the field - on counting tables.
The state will witness a high-profile electoral contest between Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union minister of state for commerce and industry and sitting president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA), and state industry minister Kailash Vijayvargiya. They will be fighting for the coveted position of president of one of India’s richest cricketing body.
Two years back Vijayvargiya received a thorough drubbing in the hands of Scindia who had won the post of president with a margin of 70 votes. With the scion of the royal family of Gwalior being a clear favourite this time too, a similar outcome is a big possibility.
Both the candidates spent the day before the elections meeting supporters and voters. Congress leaders Mahesh Joshi, Pankaj Sanghvi, Ashwin Joshi, Tulsi Silawat and Satyanarayan Patel accompanied Scindia as he campaigned. Incumbent MPCA chairman MK Bhargava and secretary Narendra Menon was also on his side.
Scindia, who enjoys the support of cricketers, rarely talks about the elections while meeting voters. He chats with their family members, inquiring about their health and other sundry matters. Among others, the MPCA president visited the homes of prominent figures in the MP cricket fraternity like Vijay Sethi, Pankaj Badjatya, Prabhakar Purandare, Narendra Gokhale, P C Brahmo, Vijay Patvardhan and Ramesh Chandra Gupta. He was greeted enthusiastically not just because he is a minister or royalty, but also because of his sterling innings as the head of the cricketing body.
Vijayvargiya too spend his day knocking on the doors of prospective voters. He met around 10 MPCA members on Saturday, the day when he finally declared his panel of candidates. Called Maa Ahilya Panel, it has former class player Subodh Saxena, who along with Sanjeev Rao and Bahram Bangara, will contest for the posts of vice-president. For the secretary’s post the state minister has pitched Amitabh Vijayvargiya.
Scindia to chair AGM
Indore: The annual general meeting (AGM) of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association will start at 10 pm. MPCA president Jyotiraditya Scindia will chair the meeting. CEO Rohit Pandit informed that on Sunday morning only members will be allowed to enter the stadium. The election will take place after the AGM.
HC to hear case today
Indore: A two-member bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Indore will hear the writ petition filed by 20 “ousted” members of MPCA on Sunday. Justice Shantanu Kemkar and Justice P K Jaiswal will hear the case. The hearing assumes significance since the voting for MPCA elections take place on Sunday night itself.
