Post-demonetisation, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected a lot of revenue including those which were pending for the last several years.

The civic body is now is in a better position to spend on several projects. The work on arch and cable bridge project has accelerated and BMC plans to beautify VIP Road and fix the broken railings of the road.

Additional commissioner and revenue in-charge, BMC Pradeep Verma told HT, “We have collected record revenue of about Rs 20 – 23 crore in both the weeks after demonetization when it was announced that old notes would be accepted by BMC. About 15% of these taxes were paid by defaulters, who had been delaying payment to the civic body for years. BMC now has funds to spend on delayed projects.”

BMC has now set aside Rs 1.8 crore for the renovation and beautification of VIP Road. Some railings of the VIP Road have been stolen and some are broken. These will be replaced by new railings. In 2010 BMC had also constructed a lakeview point on VIP Road which had been defaced by people. The civic body will now renovate the point. “The entire road will be given a heritage look. Gates would be constructed on the side of the road which will be a replica of the Mughal era. A lake front project will also be developed at Karbala triangle of VIP Road. The beautification work has already begun and will soon be completed,” Verma said.
