A six-month pregnant woman jumped out of moving dumper truck to escape a rape bid by the driver and his accomplice in Kolar area, police said on Sunday.

The husband of the victim, who was beaten up by the accused for putting up a resistance, had also jumped out of the vehicle.

Both the victims have suffered severe injuries, while the condition of the woman is stated to be critical.

Police have arrested the accused driver, identified as Rais Khan, 28, with the help of footages collected from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at different squares in the city.

“A case under Sections 354 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused. His accomplice is still on the run,” Kolar town inspector Akhilesh Mishra said.

The 20-year-old woman and her husband, residents of Barkheda Pathani area, had taken a lift from the sand-laden dumper on Saturday night to file a complaint against their family members with the local police after a brawl when the incident happened, he said.

The dumper driver Rais Khan, 28, and his accomplice allegedly beat up the man and tried to rape his wife while still on move, he said.

The accused also threatened them of dire consequences. The couple leaped out of the vehicle to escape the assault.

The bleeding couple was later spotted by some commuters, who admitted them to a private hospital with the help of 108 emergency services.

“After a daylong search, police nabbed Khan with the help of CCTV camera footages. We are on the lookout for his accomplice,” Mishra said.

In his statement to police, the accused has said that he had not done anything wrong with the couple and did not know why the couple had jumped off the vehicle.
