Senior Congress leader Gufran-e-Azam on Friday demanded that Priyanka Gandhi be made the party's star campaigner for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
"I am not saying that Priyanka should be made the prime minister but only asking that she be made the star campaigner for Congress in the Lok Sabha elections," Gufran, a former MP, told reporters in Bhopal.
He said he had sent a letter about this to party president Sonia Gandhi and added that copies had been sent to all AICC office-bearers and various state party unit presidents.
The senior Congress leader said that an sms poll should be conducted in the country to find out if people would accept Priyanka as a star campaigner or not.
It appeared that Priyanka was being prevented from entering politics, Azam claimed.
Asked if it was the Congress or the Gandhi family, which was not allowing Priyanka to enter politics, he said, "I do not know anything and it is for you to find out the truth".
In the last Lok Sabha polls, Priyanka's role was limited only to Amethi and Rae Bareli for obvious reasons, Azam said adding it should now be expanded.
The senior Congress leader said he had worked with Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi adding that Priyanka appeared to have the reflection of all three.
Azam said that he had nothing against Rahul Gandhi who according to him was doing wonderful work for Congress and that he should continue with his task.
