Soon the district hospital of Bhopal, JP Hospital, would have a special maternity wing of 100 beds.
The proposal of a separate wing for maternity has been approved by the state government.
Now, there are only 36 beds in the hospital that are dedicated to maternity cases.
The motive of establishing a separate wing is to provide total care to mothers so that maternal mortality rate can be reduced. This wing will have advanced facilities and latest technology.
Recently, a team of project implementation unit of public works department inspected the proposed area of the hospital for constructing the maternity wing.
Dr Veena Sinha, superintendent of JP Hospital, said the construction work for the maternity wing would be started soon. The three-storey building of maternity wing would be constructed in place of existing private wards.
These private wards would be destroyed for this purpose, she added.
Diagnosis, treatment and delivery of mothers would be provided in this building, Dr Sinha said. Those women who face complications during delivery would be kept in a separate ward having 20 beds.
“This 20-bed ward would be a kind of intensive care unit (ICU). Only critical cases would be kept in this ward. Doctors and paramedical staff will observe these patients around-the-clock,” Dr Sinha said.
After the construction of maternity wing, the orthopaedics department would be shifted to its ground floor.
The new maternity wing will also have two operating theatres: one for maternity and other for gynaecology.
The out-patient department of the gynaecology department and the facilities of all the pathology and microbiology tests required in a maternity wing would be also provided in the same building.
Ten private wards would be also present in the new maternity wing.
