Her mother, a 16-year-old, has herself been ostracized by her family after her pregnancy became apparent and stayed at the Sakhi Centre, rescue home for girls in Ujjain for a shade over three months and gave normal birth to a child on April 19, at the district hospital.

But the mother developed complications and had to be referred to the MY Hospital in Indore for further treatment, and the baby was denied the mother’s care even for a few days.

Sakhi centre administrator, Premlata Mehta said neither the mother nor her family wanted to take care of the child. That’s why she will be sent to the state run orphanage in Ujjain.

Premata said they counselled the victim a lot, but she refused to take care of the child and much to the dismay of the staff there she did not show any interest in studies either.

“We have decided that she will be sent to the rescue home for girls in Ujjain, where she will learn tailoring so that she is able to earn her livelihood,” Premlata said.

As for the baby she will be put up for adoption in a due course of time, officials of the district administration, who are closely monitoring the situation said.

Officials said that though they counselled the victim, they also understood why she wanted to abandon her child.

The victim lived at a slum on AB Road falling under the Dewas Kotwali police station. Here she was repeatedly raped by a 55-year-old man Nooruddin Sheikh, who was her father’s friend and used to come to the house frequently. Terrified by the ordeal she was going through she did not tell her family about the repeated rapes. But she became pregnant and it became apparent soon enough. Neighbours and family members pressed her and she divulged how she was a victim of rape. The neighbours caught hold of Nooruddin and handed him over to the police which booked him and sent him to jail.

“She will never get any support from the father, or her family, so we are not surprised that she has decided to abandon the child. She wants to start afresh and the child will remind her of her ordeal. We have noticed similar reaction from rape victims who have conceived and given birth,” an official said.
