The Balaghat incident has led to a serious confrontation between the RSS leadership and the state government. The RSS leaders feel the officer — who was responsible for the alleged attack on the worker — was not Baihar police station in-charge Zia ul Haq but the inspector general (IG) of police of Balaghat and IPS officer DC Sagar.
An RSS worker, Suresh Yadav, was allegedly beaten up by Baihar police station personnel in presence of additional superintendent of police Rajesh Sharma on September 25 after an FIR was lodged against him by a member of a minority community for allegedly posting communally sensitive comments on Whatsapp.
It led to Yadav’s hospitalisation, suspension of and FIR against 10 police personnel and home guards and shifting of two IPS officers. The IG and superintendent of police (SP) of Balaghat Asit Yadav were transferred on October 2, about a week after the incident.
The RSS leaders also feel the genesis of the assault was not the post on Whatsapp but it lay somewhere else.
“The media is not reporting the truth or perhaps not trying to get to the truth. Since the police inspector Zia ul Haq comes from the Muslim community, the media conveniently drew a conclusion that it was a Hindu vs Muslim issue,” said a senior RSS office-bearer.
‘Officer behind the brutal beating was the IG police’
“The fact was that the police inspector may have been responsible for the brutal beating but the officer behind all this was the IG police DC Sagar. We all know he is linked to the ideology of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and if his past records are seen, he has always targetted the RSS workers,” he added.
Another RSS office-bearer said the fact remained that the SP was not taken into confidence during the entire episode and the police personnel who launched the assault on Suresh Yadav were getting instructions from the IG only.
“What made us more upset was that some members of a particular community accompanied the police personnel who attacked the pracharak in the RSS office. It was utter lawlessness,” said the office-bearer.
He said the post on Whatsapp, which the police alleged was forwarded by Suresh Yadav, was not the reason behind the police personnel attacking him. “He had been working in the area for a long time against conversion and it was his untiring efforts that a significant number of Hindu girls who were lured in the name of marriages by members of a particular community returned home.”
Suresh Yadav was popular in the area given his social work and this was the reason a large number of people, which included a good number of women, gathered at the police station in his support, the RSS worker added.
All the charges against me are baseless: IG
Sagar, however, said, “I was not in the district at all when the incident took place. I was in Jabalpur. There was no communication with me. In fact, I came to know about the incident after I was told about this. All the charges against me are baseless. I wish to reject the charges strongly.”
