Social activist Abdul Jabbar launched a civic campaign ‘ Nagar Nigam Sharm Karo’ (Shame BMC) on Monday from Railway Station area to highlight the pressing civic problems of the city. The campaign has been launched under the banner of NGO Sadprayas.

Under the campaign, Jabbar and his supporters put banners just outside the platform number 1, where there is over a 200-feet long public wall, which is mostly used by people for urinating. The banner reads, “Welcome to the huge urinal on the entry gate of Bhopal. Whether this urinal is good or bad, convey the same to BMC commissioner on his mobile 9424499500 through SMS or email to him on commbhopal@”

Jabbar told HT that whenever any new visitor comes out of the Bhopal railway station, literally the gateway to Bhopal, the unwelcome stink of putrefying urine makes a very unfavourable first impression of the city of lakes. “It is perhaps the longest public urinal in Asia.”

Jabbar said adequate attention needs to be given to the construction/section improvement of roadside storm water drains (both open and closed) to facilitate proper draining of storm water into natural drains and also to maintain proper road surface.

“The public walls here have also been defaced by the traders, political parties, coaching institutes and other commercial establishments, most of whom use strong adhesives and glues while pasting posters and white washing the walls, which makes it difficult to clear the painted walls with water.”

Jabbar said that for the last over a decade, he has been continuously trying to bring to notice of the authorities the inadequacies in the railway station area, but they have never been serious about the development of this area. “The one km long concrete road from GRP Thana to Habeebia School has not been built properly. On platform number 1 side, the drain in front of the shops keeps overflowing and creates a big mess in the area.

The divider and high mask in front of the station gate is impeding the smooth movement of the traffic and often leads to traffic jams,” he said.
