An air-conditioner and television mechanic in MP’s Seoni town allegedly killed his wife’s brother on Saturday-Sunday intervening night over the latter’s habit of regularly borrowing money.

Fearing that he might be caught for killing Shailendra Patle, Nagendra Thackarey (38) subsequently went on a killing spree, attacking his mother Pramilla, wife Sarojni and elder daughter with a pick-axe. He, however, was unable to gather the courage to attack his four-year-old daughter.

His mother died en route to the hospital, while his wife and elder daughter are battling for their lives at a Nagpur hospital.

“On Friday, Patle took Rs 1.70 lakh kept by Thackarey for buying a plot. On Saturday late night when Thackarey returned from Jabalpur and got to know about the same, he became angry,” Seoni SP AK Pandey said.

While the rest of the family went to sleep, Thackarey took Patle outdoors and had a noisy brawl over the money, which turned violent after Thackarey attacked him with a pick-axe, police said.

Since the family had seen Thackarey get angry over Patle taking the money, the mechanic feared that his kin would help the police arrest him. He then attacked his family while they slept with the same weapon.

“He first attacked his mother, then wife and finally his elder daughter, but could not kill his younger daughter, who had woken up by then and seen him commit the murders,” the Seoni SP said.

The girl then ran out of the house and alerted the neighbours, but by then Thackarey had fled.

“Based on information given by the little girl, we tracked her father and arrested him. He has confessed to the crime and has plunged into deep depression. We’re keeping him under vigil to prevent him from a possible suicide,” said Pandey.
