Two teenagers who had set themselves on fire following sexual harassment – one in Vidisha, the other in Sehore -- succumbed to their burns in a hospital in Bhopal on Sunday.

The 19-year-old girl who set herself on fire in Sehore’s Nasrullahganj, had suffered a rape attempt by a neighbour on Thursday.

The youth, Sanjeev Yadav, had been sexually harassing her for a while and the girl’s family had lodged a complaint with the police. But that did not deter him. On Thursday, his attempt to rape the girl was foiled after she raised an alarm, but unable to bear the humiliation, she set herself on fire.

The family of the deceased, residents of Vidisha -- 55 km from the state capital -- had lodged a complaint with the police after she was sexually harassed by Rishi Jalori and Raju Naik. The men had been pressurising the girl’s family to withdraw the complaint.

On Saturday, they had targeted the girl again. Naik and a policeman, Gore Lal, had accosted her on the road and threatened to torture her brother if she didn’t withdraw the complaint. The girl came home and set herself on fire.

She was admitted to a hospital in Vidisha and later shifted to Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital. But on Sunday morning, she succumbed to her burns.
Naik has been arrested and booked for abetment to suicide, said a police officer. A hunt is on for Jalori, who owns a petrol pump in Vidisha. Gore Lal has been suspended.
