A letter purportedly from outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) threatened to blow up Bhopal court building on Friday, prompting authorities to deploy additional police force in and around the court premises.
The letter was received by a leading Hindi daily in the city on Thursday, a police officer said. The letter from SIMI also challenged the police to prevent three blasts if they can.
“The police got information on Thursday evening. Bomb disposal squad and sniffer dog squad inspected the district court. No suspicious or explosive material was found but we didn’t take the threat casually,” said inspector general (law & order) Makrand Deuskar.
“The threat seems to be a hoax but the police have beefed up vigil.”
Superintendent of police (north) Arvind Saxena told HT that the deployment of additional force in the court was a security exercise. “The police always take every threat seriously. Investigations are also on to find people, who sent the letter. Strict action would be taken against them.”
Policemen in full gear were seen guarding the court on Friday. Every person entering in the court premises were frisked thoroughly with metal hand detectors.
