In contrast to the hype over eco-friendly idols for the past few weeks, idols of Lord Ganesha made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) are being sold in markets of the state capital in violation of environmental norms.

Many vendors are even selling last year’s retouched and repainted PoP idols.

The Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) guidelines specify that idols should be made from natural materials as described in the holy scripts and traditional clay should be used for idol making rather than PoP.

When HT visited markets in the city, a large number of stalls were found selling idols made of PoP.

When HT asked a vendor in Bittan Market on selling PoP idols, he said, “Many idols are from last year. Some have been retouched and repainted. Second, the PoP idols have a good finish and are not that heavy compared to idols made of clay. So whatever a customer wants PoP idol, we give him that.”

Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) asked the state government to take strict measures for saving water bodies from effects of immersion of PoP idols.

MPSPCB regional officer Bhopal PS Bundela said there had been a shift in the mindset of people towards eco-friendly idols.

“We have conducted workshops stressing that natural materials be used for idol making. And it is bringing change. Hopefully in next two years, almost all will shift to eco-friendly idols. Also, this being a religious matter, there are limitations in pushing people. But, we are encouraging both idol makers and people to go for environmental friendly idols,” he said.
