Chief executive officer (CEO) of Zila Panchayat in Harda Shanmukh Priya Mishra was awarded a bat by cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar carrying his autograph at a ceremony in Delhi on Friday acknowledging her as the ‘champion of sanitation’ for excellent and proactive drives in the field of hygiene and sanitation.
Harda was declared an open-defecation free (ODF) district recently.
Tendulkar, the brand ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission, felicitated 20 IAS officials across the country for their contributions in the mission.
The programme was organised by the ministry of drinking water and sanitation.
Mishra along with 6 others also got the opportunity to make a power point presentation on her field work.
The ODF campaign in Harda was first initiated by IAS officer Ganesh Shankar Mishra, ex-CEO of Harda ZP and husband of Shanmukh Priya, and she carried the work forward. She achieved the ODF status for rural Harda on the eve of 70th Independence Day.
“Meeting Tendulkar was a dream come true for me, It was like an ideal congratulating you for your mission. Making a presentation before him was a moment of pride. I never thought I would be rewarded for this,” Mishra told HT.
In 2014, the state government named its campaign against open defecation as ‘Operation Mal Yuddha’ which was widely followed in Harda.
In 2015, a competition — ‘Bhai No 1’ — was launched by the Harda district administration where men who ensured that their sisters had access to clean toilets were rewarded.
The competition was appreciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio talk ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
