With the rescuing of a 20-year-old woman and the arrest of three men from Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh, police have exposed a Maharashtra-based trafficking racket using hormonal injections to force premature girls into prostitution.

“We have so far arrested three men (two from Dewas and one from Maharashtra), including one Rahul Sethi to whom the woman was sold by the sex racket operators in January 2012 for an unspecified amount,” Khategaon police station in-charge Tehzeeb Qazi told HT on Thursday.

“Subsequent raids in Maharashtra have led us to two more men, including the son of the woman who operated the racket,” he said, adding that the arrested men have been booked for human trafficking and rape.

A search has been launched to arrest the other members of the racket, especially its chief operator woman and also the victim’s aunt who had sold her to the racket for `70,000 in November 2011.

The victim, hailing from Amravati district in Maharashtra, told police that she tried to set herself on fire on Tuesday.

She had been kept locked in a room in Khategaon where she was repeatedly sexually exploited by Rahul, his friends and his father. Earlier, Rahul used to keep her in a room in Indore, Qazi said quoting her statement.

After escaping from the room, she called the Khategaon police after dialling 100, following which the cops swung into action and arrested the men.

The woman, in her statement, said after she was sold by her aunt to the racket operator, she was kept in a locked room, possibly in Amravati only, and shown to prospective buyers from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Punjab.

But owing to her tender age and slim body, she could not be sold following which she was administered hormonal injections to force premature growth in her height and body parts. She was subsequently taken to several places in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, including Mhow, Surat, Indore, Khalghat (Dhar), where she was raped repeatedly.

In January 2012, she was sold to Rahul who sexually exploited her and also inflicted burn injuries on her private parts using cigarettes for not cooperating with him and the other men, Qazi said.

The victim told the police that after her father died when she was 7, she along with mother, younger sister and two brothers moved to her maternal grandparents place at a village in Amravati.

She was a promising student and wanted to become an engineer. She had topped her school exam in class 7 in 2009, after which her photograph was published in a newspaper, causing jealousy among her father’s family living in Amravati town.

One of the paternal aunts, on the pretext of funding her better education brought her to Amravati town, got her admitted in a big school from where she passed class 8 with high scores.

“But after Diwali in 2011, I was given dinner laced with intoxicants after which I became unconscious. When I gained consciousness next morning I found myself at the house of the (racket operator) woman, who told me that I was sold to her for `70,000,” the victim told reporters at the Khategaon police station on Tuesday.

She has now been sent back to her maternal family in Amravati district.
