Tree plantation, cycle rally mark World Environment Day

Several programmes were organised on the occasion of the World Environment Day in Bhopal on Friday. On the occasion, plantations were done, exhibitions, quiz competitions were organised at various places.

Green Planet Bicycle Riders Association took out a cycle rally on the occasion.

The three-day Environment Day celebrations at Regional Science Centre started with plantation of Ashoka (Saraca indica) tree by school students. The programme was organised under the banner of Environment Planning and Coordination Organisation (EPCO).

Centre’s project coordinator Prabal Roy inaugurated an exhibition on medicinal plants. The exhibition displayed around 36 species of plants for visitors.

An open house quiz on the theme ‘Environment’ was held followed by a lecture on ‘7 Billion Dreams; One Planet: Consume with Care’ delivered by Amitabh Pandey, professor of Sociology, Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM).

The event concluded with prize distribution function. UM Shukla and Pradeep Sharma, chief scientific officers, EPCO were prominently present on the occasion and distributed the prizes and certificates among the winners. A souvenir counter -- ‘PITARA’ by NGO Eklavya was also inaugurated.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched a special initiative to plant bamboo seedlings at space available at factory premises of its members. Bamboo consumes less water, helps in soil erosion and absorb 25-30% more carbon dioxide and emits equal proposition of oxygen in the environment.

“It is our duty to do every bit to save the environment. I am sure planting of trees at factory locations will not only reduce the carbon footprint but also act in creating an ideal working environment for employees,” said Girish Mangla, chairman CII Madhya Pradesh.

On the occasion, Young Indians Bhopal, an organisation of young entrepreneurs, has taken up the task of landscaping the premises of Central Jail. This includes plantation drives, Swachh Bharat activities and other social Initiatives like donation of bicycles.

Various programs were also organised at Regional Museum of Natural History. A poster exhibition was held and origami models were created by children. Clay models created by children during a competition were also exhibited on this occasion.

A prize distribution ceremony was organised for the winners of all competitions. A cycle rally was also taken out by Green Planet Bicycle Riders Association.
