Two elderly women were run over by a speeding train at Subhash Nagar railway crossing in Bhopal. They were crossing the railway track on Monday morning despite the gate being closed.
The women were identified as Latifa Bano (65) and Hazara Bi (70), residents of Sudama Nagar in Old Subhash Nagar. They were going to withdraw their oldage pension from a bank in MP Nagar.
The gate was closed as Andman Superfast Express (16031) was about to arrive. According to eyewitnesses, people standing near the railway crossing told the women not to cross the track as the train was scheduled to arrive but the women did not pay heed to their advice.
They came under the speeding train and sustained severe injuries. Subsequently, they were rushed to Hamidia Hospital.
"We warned them not to cross the railway track until the train passed. However, they did not listen to us and came under the train," said Vikas Tiwari, an eyewitness.
Aishbagh police said Latifa Bano died on the way to a hospital while Hazara was declared brought dead at the hospital. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI), Aisbagh police station, said a case has been registered and investigation is on.
In another incident, body of a 50-year-old man was found on the railway track near Pul Patra on Monday. The man was identified as Pratap, who used to run a tea stall in the area. It is surmised that he accidently came under a train and died. Government railway police (GRP), Bhopal has registered a case and started investigation. The GRP, however, did not rule out the possibility of suicide or foul play.
