A five-year-old white tigress died at the Mukundpur white tiger safari, zoo and rescue centre in Satna district on Tuesday evening.
Local sources said that the tigress, named Radha, had not been eating for the last few days. They also said that three weeks ago, Radha had been injured in a fight with male tiger Nakul, who was brought into her enclosure for mating.
Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey said he has written a letter to the Central Zoo Authority member secretary to apprise the body on the death. He claimed that the death of the tigress was due to a forceful mating attempt in the absence of experts and a proper breeding centre.
Despite repeated attempts, the official in-charge of the Mukundpur centre didn’t respond.
On November 9, 2015, after the setting up of required infrastructure, one white tiger — Vindhya — was translocated to Mukundpur from Bhillai. Later, Radha and white male Raghu were also translocated from Bhilai, while two Royal Bengal tigers were shifted from Aurangabad zoo.
The centre was inaugurated by then union minister for environment and forests Prakash Javadekar in April this year.
