Members of different minority organisations have threatened to appeal to the judiciary if Surya Namaskar is forced upon Muslim students. School education department has clarified that Surya Namaskar is a voluntary exercise, but some organisations want it to be enforced on Muslim students.
"We have received complaints from parents that some of the students were forced to do Surya Namaskar against their will. If it happens again then we will go to court," said Ausaf Shahmeeri Khurram, the president of All India Teohar Committee.
Another organisation, Muslim Coordination Committee, too had plans to move court if any case of forced performance of exercise is reported. "I can't say anything at this moment but if rights of a person are violated, doors of courts are always open," said Masood Khan, committee's coordinator.
"One cannot assume anything beforehand; let things happen then only the committee would decide on taking action," added Khan. The committee had distributed pamphlets with numbers of helpline on it. The pamphlets appealed to Muslim students not to perform Surya Namaskar as it is against basic tenets of Islam.
