An additional sessions court on Wednesday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her six-month-old daughter. Ritu Ahuja (26) dumped her daughter Arohi in a drain in the city’s Nayagaon locality on September 7, 2014.
According to additional government prosecutor (AGP) LS Thakur, Ahuja was alone in the house with Arohi on the day of the incident. She took her daughter on a two-wheeler to the Nayagaon locality where she dumped her daughter in the drain with intention to kill.
She then lodged a fake complaint with the Civil Lines police station about her daughter being kidnapped.
During their investigation, the police discovered CCTV footage, where a woman with baby carrier bag is seen driving a two-wheeler but is seen returning later sans the bag. On the basis of the footage, Ahuja was arrested. In her statement to the police, Ahuja said she killed Arohi so that she could take care of her three-and-half-year old son. On basis of her statements the police searched and seized pieces of bones, few pieces of clothes and a locket of the baby near the drain.
The court convicted her under IPC Section 302 (murder) and sentenced her to rigorous life imprisonment, also imposing a fine of `5,000. She was also booked under IPC Section 203 (giving false information) and sentenced two years rigorous imprisonment, with both sentences to run concurrently.
