A 23-year-old housewife was admitted to hospital with 65% burns after she was allegedly set ablaze by her husband and father-in-law over dowry in Bhopal, police said on Monday.
The woman, identified as Durga Mehra, being treated at Hamidia Hospital. Police have detained her husband Amit Mehra and father-in-law Rajesh Mehra.
Durga was married to Amit five years ago. She had been staying with him and his father near Futa Makbara under Hanumanganj police station ever since. Durga, a mother of two, was frequently being beaten up and harassed for dowry, neighbours alleged.
On Sunday night, her neighbours called the police when they heard cries for help from Durga at around 11 pm. They alleged the duo first beat her up and then poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
The neighbours rushed Durga to Hamidia Hospital in a critical condition. Investigation officer (IO) JP Tripathi said that a case had been registered against Amit and his Rajesh under sections 307, 506, 34 and 498 (A) of the IPC.
