The woman for whom gangster Mukhtar Malik had allegedly got a marble businessman kidnapped recently and in turn invited the attention of police has been arrested.
Anita alias Rani, 45, a resident of Jinsi, was arrested and sent to jail. Police said that Anita, who is into marble business, had bought property from another businessman, Bal Krishna but after staying in the newly acquired premises for a few months insisted on returning the house and wanted her money back.
"When Bal Krishna didn't agree, she reached the 'bhai's durbar' to get the issue settled", said a policeman on conditions of anonymity. However, when Mukhtar Malik's phone call didn't work, the history-sheeter allegedly sent his cronies who abducted Bal Krishna and used their methods to force him to immediately pay Rs 10 lakh in separate cheques and cash.
It was this incident that brought policemen's focus back on Mukhtar Malik, and on the basis of this latest complaint, police had arrested him on Friday. Senior Superintendent of Police (CSP) Yogesh Choudhary confirmed that Anita was arrested and later remanded to judicial custody.
CSP Salim Khan said Mukhtar Malik and his associates are being interrogated. Town inspector (TI) PN Goel said that cell phones used in the crime and vehicle used in abduction have been seized.
Mukhtar Malik's links with criminals in other states are also being probed. A case was registered against him in Ajmer recently. As police have got ample time to quiz Mukhtar Malik, they are going to dig up files pertaining to old cases.
Though police officials were tight-lipped about the interrogation, sources said that Mukhtar Malik hasn't revealed much. Senior officials were busy in security related meetings, particularly the visit of Sri Lankan president here, and hence couldn't quiz him.
The Jehangirabad police quizzed him regarding the abduction case. His two other associates Raja and Arif were also interrogated. On Monday, senior officials are likely to interrogate him in separate sessions.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has congratulated the Bhopal police for taking action on Mukhtar Malik. Apart from ADG Vijay Yadav and SSP Yogesh Choudhary, the chief minister also patted CSP Salim Khan who led the team that had caught the history-sheeter.
