Director Rohit Shetty’s comedy film Golmaal- Fun Unlimited released 11 years ago today.

It was the year 2006, when director Rohit Shetty and actor actor Ajay Devgn decided to team up for a comedy film. While not many had big hopes from it, the film was a surprise hit upon release. The critics and the viewers appreciated the gags, with the music equally loved by everyone.

The film was Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, starring actors Ajay, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Sharman Joshi. The supporting cast was top-notch too, consisting of actors Paresh Rawal and Sushmita Mukherjee, who played the blind couple in whose bungalow the four runaway crooks take shelter. And who can forget Vasooli bhai (played brilliantly by Mukesh Tiwari)?

The response to the film was so good, that two sequels followed—Golmaal Returns (2008) and Golmaal 3 (2010). The fourth film in the franchise is in the making, titled Golmaal Again, with actors Parineeti Chopra and Tabu being the new additions to the cast.

Golmaal: Fun Unlimited celebrates 11 years of release today. Here are give fun facts about the film you might not have known about:

Ajay Devgn was Gopal, Tushhar Kapoor was Lucky, Arshad Warsi was Madhav and Sharman Joshi was Laxman.

1.We bet you don’t know how the title of the film was decided! The first letters of the names of the four lead characters was used to create the title- GOpal,Laxman, MAdhav, and Lucky.

Ajay Devgn had his trademark swag even in his debut film Phool Aur Kaante!

2.Actor Ajay Devgn’s entry scene in the film saw him balancing himself on two bikes. It was actually a tribute to a similar stunt in his debut film Phool Aur Kaante (1991). And the stunt director for it was none other than Ajay’s father, Veeru Devgn!

The songs composed by Vishal-Shekhar were hits too.

3.This one is quite an achievement. After its release, Microsoft decided to include an emoji of the film well as several other Bollywood emojis in its video calling sofware Skype in an effort to appeal to users in India and to honour Indian culture.

Film critics too had good things to say about the film, and had predicted it’s success at the box-office

4.In a way, Golmaal was Ajay’s comeback to comedy films. Masti (2004) was the last comedy film he did before Golmaal happened two years later. He had 12 releases in those two years, all in the genres of drama and thriller.

Arshad Warsi spoofed actor Rani Mukherji’s portrayal of a visually-challenged woman in the film Black (2005).

5.The running gag in all three parts has been that the characters always spoof a film/TV show. In Golmaal, it was the film Black, with actor Arshad dressed up as the visually-challenged Rani Mukherji from the film. In the second part, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan recited dialogues from TV producer Ekta Kapoor’s saas-bahu sagas. In the third part, actor Mithun Chakraborty spoofed himself from his film Disco Dancer (1982), performing to the song with the same name.
