Remember Aamir Khan’s cult films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (’92)? Well, audiences might witness another biggie soon as the actor teams up again with cousin and writer-director Mansoor Khan for a new script. Apparently Aamir came up with an idea for a script and promptly discussed it with Mansoor, wife Kiran Rao and cousin Nuzhat Khan (actor Imran Khan’s mother). Now, all four are working together on the storyline of the film, which Kiran is likely to direct.
“Mansoor and Kiran are working on the script with Aamir. Mom will, of course, be a sounding board. We always run ideas by her and get feedback,” says Imran. Interestingly, Aamir has, in the past, written Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (’93). This will mark his return to the craft after more than a decade. Mansoor, too, will make a comeback to the big screen after a long, self-imposed exile from Bollywood, which he broke only to produce nephew Imran’s debut film, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, in 2008. He has also directed hits such as Qayamat Se... Jo Jeeta... Akele Hum Akele Tum (’95) and Josh (2000).
Apparently, Aamir went all out to convince Mansoor to write a film story for him, convincing him to take up direction again for the former’s production house. Ask Imran about the storyline and he feigns ignorance: “Honestly, I don’t know what they are working on. But that’s how we work in our family. When Kiran was working on Dhobi Ghat, I didn’t know what the film was about. And I didn’t really need to know. The same goes for Peepli Live (2010). I only knew the film had something to do with media and farmer suicides.”
Of course, things are at a nascent stage but the story is believed to be a mainstream one, unlike Kiran’s directorial debut venture, Dhobi Ghat. In all probability, Aamir will star in the film too. If the script gets locked in the next five-six months, he plans to start work on the film after he wraps up Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom 3 next year.
